Arjuna's Dilemma
Arjun Viṣhād Yog
Chapter 1 sets the stage for the Bhagavad Gita on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The blind King Dhritarashtra asks his minister Sanjaya about the events. Sanjaya describes the two massive armies, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, blowing their conch shells to signal the start of the war. Arjuna asks Lord Krishna, his charioteer, to drive his chariot between the two armies. Seeing his beloved grandfathers, teachers, friends, and relatives on the opposing side, Arjuna is overwhelmed with deep sorrow and compassion. He loses his will to fight, arguing that killing his own kin for a kingdom will bring great sin and destroy family traditions. Trembling and heartbroken, Arjuna drops his weapons and sits down on the chariot, refusing to fight.
