Bhagavad Gita 1.42

Arjuna says

saṅkaro narakāyaiva kulaghnānāṃ kulasya ca
patanti pitaro hyeṣāṃ luptapiṇḍodakakriyāḥ

Meaning

This social breakdown creates a living hell for both the family and those who ruined it. Even their ancestors suffer, because the traditional offerings of food and water are abandoned.

What it means for us today

In traditional belief, ancestors rely on the spiritual offerings of their descendants. Arjuna worries that a broken society will forget these duties, harming both the living and the dead.
