Path of Meditation

Dhyān Yog

In Chapter 6, Krishna explains the path of meditation and the importance of mastering the mind. True renunciation means performing duties without attachment to results. The mind can be our greatest friend if controlled, but our worst enemy if left unchecked. Krishna advises practicing meditation in a secluded place while maintaining moderation in eating, sleeping, and working. When Arjuna compares the restless mind to the wind, Krishna reassures him that constant practice and detachment can tame it. Furthermore, Krishna explains that an unsuccessful yogi is never lost; they are reborn in a favorable environment to continue their spiritual journey across lifetimes. Ultimately, the highest yogi is one who sees the Divine in all beings and remains completely absorbed in the Supreme Lord with deep faith.

Krishna said: True renunciants and yogis are those who do what needs to be done without depending on the results of their actions. It is not simply about giving up physical work or stopping traditional rituals.
Arjuna, understand that true renunciation is actually the same thing as yoga. No one can truly practice yoga without first letting go of selfish motives and personal desires.
For someone just starting on the path of yoga, active effort is the way forward. Once they have reached the heights of that practice, deep stillness and peace become the path.
A person is truly established in yoga when they are no longer attached to sensory pleasures or the actions that bring them. At this stage, they have completely let go of all selfish intentions.
You must use your own mind to lift yourself up, rather than letting it drag you down. Your mind can be your greatest friend, but it can also be your worst enemy.
If you have mastered your mind, it becomes your most trusted ally. If you fail to control it, your own mind will fight against you like a hostile enemy.
When a person conquers their mind and finds deep peace, they naturally connect with the Supreme. They remain perfectly balanced through heat and cold, joy and sorrow, and honor and disgrace.
A true yogi is fully satisfied by spiritual wisdom and direct experience. Having mastered their senses, they remain unshaken and see no difference in value between a lump of dirt, a stone, or a piece of gold.
A person reaches a very high level of spiritual growth when they view everyone with an equal mind. They hold the same steady regard for friends, enemies, neutral strangers, relatives, saints, and sinners.
A yogi should regularly practice focusing the mind in a quiet, secluded place. Sitting alone, they must carefully guide their mind and body, letting go of personal desires and the urge to hoard things.
To meditate, find a clean space and set up a firm seat that is neither too high nor too low. Traditionally, this is made by layering sacred grass, a deerskin, and a cloth to create a stable foundation.
Sitting on that seat, you should focus your mind on a single point while keeping your thoughts and senses in check. This focused practice of yoga is meant to deeply purify the mind and heart.
Keep your body, neck, and head perfectly straight and still. Focus your gaze gently toward the tip of your nose, avoiding the distraction of looking around.
With a calm and fearless heart, and grounded in a life of self-discipline, sit quietly and guide your thoughts. Focus your mind entirely on Me, holding Me as your ultimate goal.
By constantly practicing this mental and physical discipline, the yogi finds profound peace. This supreme tranquility ultimately leads to liberation and union with Me.
Arjuna, the path of yoga is not for someone who overeats, nor for someone who starves themselves. It also cannot be practiced by those who sleep too much or force themselves to stay awake.
Yoga becomes a destroyer of sorrow for those who live a balanced life. This means finding healthy moderation in eating, working, relaxing, and sleeping.
When a well-trained mind rests entirely within the true self, it becomes free from the pull of worldly desires. At that point, a person is fully established in yoga.
Just as a candle flame does not flicker in a windless room, the disciplined mind of a yogi remains perfectly steady. In this stillness, they stay deeply focused on the true self.
Through the practice of yoga, the mind eventually becomes completely still and quiet. In this deep state of awareness, you can finally see your true self and find complete joy within it.
In this state, you experience a profound, limitless happiness that goes far beyond the physical senses. Once established in this truth, you will never drift away from it.
Having reached this state, you realize there is no greater treasure to be found. Grounded in this deep peace, you remain unshaken even by the heaviest of sorrows.
Understand that yoga is essentially the state of being disconnected from all suffering. It is a practice that requires steady determination and a resilient, optimistic heart.
You must completely let go of all desires born from selfish thinking, leaving none behind. Use your mind to gently but firmly rein in your senses from every direction.
Step by step, use your intellect and steady conviction to bring your mind to a state of complete rest. By anchoring your thoughts entirely on the true self, you stop the endless stream of mental chatter.
The mind is naturally restless and will inevitably wander off. Whenever it does, simply catch it and gently bring it back under the focus of your true self.
Supreme happiness naturally flows to the yogi whose mind is perfectly peaceful and whose restless passions have quieted down. Free from inner impurities, they experience a deep oneness with the Divine.
By continually guiding the mind in this way, the yogi washes away all inner negativity. They easily and naturally experience the boundless joy of being connected to the Supreme.
A true yogi sees the Divine residing in all beings, and all beings resting within the Divine. Grounded in this awareness, they look upon everyone everywhere with true equality.
For the person who sees Me everywhere and sees everything within Me, we are never separated. I am never lost to them, and they are never lost to Me.
A yogi who is rooted in oneness and honors Me in all living things always dwells within Me. This remains true no matter how they live or what circumstances they face.
Arjuna, the highest type of yogi is one who feels the joys and sorrows of others as if they were their own. They recognize a profound, shared equality across all life.
Arjuna said: Krishna, this system of yoga based on perfect balance sounds impractical to me. Because the human mind is so hopelessly restless, I do not see how this state can ever last.
The mind is turbulent, stubborn, and incredibly strong, Krishna. Trying to tame it feels just as impossible as trying to catch and control the wind.
Krishna replied: Arjuna, there is no doubt that the restless mind is incredibly difficult to master. However, it can absolutely be trained through consistent practice and a healthy sense of detachment.
I agree that yoga is nearly impossible for someone who makes no effort to control their mind. But for those who strive earnestly and use the right techniques, success is entirely within reach.
Arjuna asked: Krishna, what happens to someone who starts the spiritual path with genuine faith but lacks the discipline to finish? Where do they go if their mind wanders off before they reach perfection in yoga?
Having failed at both worldly success and spiritual growth, do they simply perish like a scattered cloud? Krishna, does such a confused seeker end up with no solid ground to stand on?
Krishna, please clear up this doubt for me completely. I know of no one else who can answer this question and put my mind at ease.
Krishna said: Arjuna, a person like that is never destroyed, neither in this life nor in the next. My friend, anyone who sincerely strives to do good will never be overcome by a bad end.
Someone who strays from the path of yoga first spends a very long time in the beautiful realms reserved for people who do good deeds. After that, they are reborn on earth into a clean, prosperous, and supportive family.
Alternatively, they might be born directly into a family of wise and spiritually grounded yogis. Getting this kind of head start in life is incredibly rare in this world.
In this new life, Arjuna, they naturally reconnect with the spiritual insight they developed in their previous body. From that point on, they push even harder to reach complete spiritual perfection.
The momentum of their past practice pulls them forward automatically, even if they feel unsure. Just by having a genuine desire to understand yoga, they move far beyond the basic rituals and rules found in the scriptures.
By putting in real effort, the yogi slowly washes away all inner impurities. Building on the progress made over many lifetimes, they finally achieve the ultimate spiritual goal.
A true yogi is greater than someone who just practices harsh self-discipline, greater than an intellectual scholar, and greater than someone who only performs good deeds for a reward. Because of this, Arjuna, you should strive to be a yogi.
Out of all the different kinds of yogis, the very best is the one who connects with me using their whole heart. I consider the person who focuses their inner self on me with deep, genuine trust to be the most spiritually united.
