Path of Knowledge and the Disciplines of Action

Jñāna Karm Sanyās Yog

In Chapter 4, Krishna reveals the eternal history of the spiritual knowledge he is sharing, explaining that he has taught it across many lifetimes. He declares that he descends to earth age after age to protect the good, destroy evil, and restore righteousness. Krishna explains the deep secret of action: one can act without being bound by karma if they work without selfish desires. By offering all actions as a sacrifice to the Supreme, a person remains free. He emphasizes that spiritual knowledge is the ultimate purifier, capable of burning away all past sins like a blazing fire. Krishna urges Arjuna to seek this wisdom from a true master, cut through his doubts with the sword of knowledge, and rise to perform his duty.

They remain perfectly centered in yoga, no matter what they are doing.

Anyone who sees the divine in every single action will surely reach that ultimate reality.
Some practitioners worship the gods by offering various external sacrifices. Others offer their very self as a sacrifice into the fire of the ultimate reality.
Some people sacrifice their hearing and other senses into the fire of strict self-discipline. Others sacrifice sound and sensory experiences into the fire of the senses themselves.

People make offerings in many ways: through their wealth, through strict physical discipline, or through the practice of yoga. Others, keeping strict vows, offer their intense study and pursuit of knowledge as their sacrifice.
Some dedicate themselves to breath control, offering the inward breath into the outward breath, and the outward into the inward. By mastering these flows, they bring their breath to a complete and peaceful standstill.
Others restrict their diet, offering their life energy back into itself. All of these seekers understand the true meaning of sacrifice, and through it, their inner impurities are cleared away.
Those who taste the nectar left over from such sacrifices reach the eternal divine reality. Arjuna, if a person makes no sacrifices at all, they cannot find joy in this world, let alone in the next.
In this way, many different types of sacrifice are laid out in the sacred texts. Once you realize that they all require action on your part, you will find true freedom.
Arjuna, offering your pursuit of wisdom is far better than offering material things. Ultimately, the goal of all action is to arrive at true spiritual knowledge.
You can learn this truth by approaching a wise teacher, asking questions with genuine humility, and offering your service. Those who have truly seen the truth will gladly share their wisdom with you.
Once you grasp this knowledge, Arjuna, you will never fall into confusion again. You will see that all living beings are within you, and ultimately, within me.
Even if you consider yourself the worst of all wrongdoers, you can still cross over that ocean of darkness. The boat of spiritual wisdom will carry you safely to the other side.
Just as a blazing fire turns firewood into ashes, Arjuna, the fire of wisdom burns all the karmic baggage of your actions to ashes.
There is absolutely nothing in this world as purifying as spiritual wisdom. As you perfect your practice of yoga, you will naturally discover this wisdom within your own heart over time.
A person who has deep faith, dedication, and mastery over their senses will attain this wisdom. Once they have it, they very quickly find a state of supreme, lasting peace.
On the other hand, someone who is ignorant, lacks faith, and constantly doubts will be ruined. For a person consumed by doubt, there is no happiness to be found in this world or the next.
Arjuna, when you use the practice of yoga to let go of attachment to your work, true knowledge destroys your doubts. A person who is fully grounded in their true self is never trapped by their actions.
Therefore, Arjuna, use the sword of wisdom to cut through the ignorant doubts lingering in your heart. Commit yourself to the path of yoga and stand up.
