Yoga through Understanding the Three Modes of Material Nature
Guṇa Traya Vibhāg Yog
In Chapter 14, Lord Krishna explains the three modes of material nature, or Gunas, which bind the eternal soul to the physical body: goodness, passion, and ignorance. Goodness brings purity, happiness, and wisdom. Passion is driven by endless desires, leading to restless actions and eventual misery. Ignorance is rooted in darkness, causing laziness and delusion. Krishna explains that these forces constantly compete for dominance within us, shaping our behavior and our future destinations after death. The ultimate goal is to transcend all three modes. By remaining neutral in happiness and distress, treating everyone equally, and practicing unwavering devotion to the Supreme Lord, a person can break free from this material cycle and attain eternal spiritual bliss.

Krishna said: I will once again explain the highest of all knowledge. By mastering this wisdom, all the sages have moved beyond this world to attain ultimate perfection.
By taking shelter in this wisdom, a person awakens to a spiritual nature identical to my own. Such people are not reborn when the universe is created, nor are they disturbed when it is destroyed.
Arjuna, the vast expanse of material nature is like a womb where I place the seed of consciousness. From this union, all living beings are born.
Arjuna, whatever forms of life arise in any species, material nature is their mother, and I am the father who provides the seed of life.
Arjuna, material nature consists of three fundamental qualities: goodness, passion, and ignorance. These three threads tie the eternal soul to the temporary physical body.
Among these, the quality of goodness is pure, bringing light and well-being. Yet, Arjuna, it still binds the soul by creating an attachment to happiness and knowledge.
Arjuna, understand that the quality of passion is fueled by endless desires and cravings. It binds the soul by attaching it to worldly actions and the pursuit of results.
Arjuna, the quality of ignorance is born from darkness and clouds the judgment of all living beings. It traps the soul through carelessness, laziness, and excessive sleep.
Arjuna, goodness ties us to happiness, and passion ties us to constant activity. Ignorance, however, completely covers our wisdom and ties us to careless mistakes.
Arjuna, these qualities are always competing. Sometimes goodness overpowers passion and ignorance; at other times, passion takes the lead, or ignorance suppresses the other two.
You can tell that the quality of goodness is dominant when the light of clear understanding shines through all the senses of the body.
Arjuna, when the quality of passion takes over, it brings a surge of greed, restless activity, selfish ambitions, and uncontrollable desires.
Arjuna, when the quality of ignorance grows, it results in mental darkness, laziness, carelessness, and deep illusion.
If a person passes away while the quality of goodness is dominant, they transition to the pure, higher realms of those who possess great spiritual wisdom.
Dying while in the grip of passion leads to rebirth among people driven by endless work and ambition. Similarly, dying in ignorance leads to rebirth in lower, deluded forms of life.
Good and mindful actions naturally produce pure results born of goodness. In contrast, actions driven by passion end in pain, and those rooted in ignorance lead only to foolishness and darkness.
Goodness gives rise to genuine wisdom, while passion breeds greed. Ignorance produces only carelessness, illusion, and a complete blindness to the truth.
Those living in goodness gradually elevate themselves to higher realms of existence. Those driven by passion remain stuck in the middle earthly realms, while those trapped in ignorance sink downward.
When you realize that all actions are simply the interplay of these three qualities of nature, and you recognize the Divine who exists beyond them, you attain my spiritual state.
By rising above these three qualities that tie us to the physical body, the soul is freed from the pains of birth, aging, and death. In this liberated state, one experiences true immortality.
Arjuna asked: Krishna, how can you recognize someone who has moved beyond these three qualities of nature? How do they act, and how exactly do they transcend these forces?
Krishna replied: Arjuna, such a person does not resent clarity, activity, or even illusion when they arise. At the same time, they do not crave these states when they fade away.
They remain like a neutral observer, completely undisturbed by the shifting qualities of nature. Knowing that it is only nature at work, they stand firm and never waver.
Centered in their true self, they view joy and sorrow with an equal mind, seeing no difference between a lump of dirt, a stone, and a piece of gold. They remain steady, treating pleasant and unpleasant events, as well as praise and criticism, exactly the same.
They are unaffected by honor or disgrace and treat both friends and enemies with the same respect. Having let go of all selfish ambitions, they are truly said to have transcended the forces of nature.
Anyone who connects with me through unwavering love and devotion easily rises above these three qualities of nature. Such a person becomes fully prepared to experience the ultimate spiritual reality.
I am the very foundation of the immortal and imperishable spiritual realm. I am the source of eternal dharma and the basis of absolute, unending joy.
