Gita Chapter 15
Chapter 15 · 20 verses
The Yoga of the Supreme Divine Personality
Puruṣhottam Yog
In Chapter 15, Lord Krishna compares the material world to an upside-down banyan tree. To achieve true liberation, one must cut down this deeply rooted tree using the strong weapon of detachment. Krishna explains that all living souls are His eternal fragments, wandering from one body to another while struggling with their senses. He reveals Himself as the ultimate source of everything: the light of the sun and moon, the sustainer of the earth, the fire of digestion, and the Supersoul residing in every heart. Beyond the fallible material world and the infallible liberated souls is Krishna Himself, the Supreme Divine Personality, or Purushottama. Surrendering to Him with devotion frees one from the cycle of rebirth and leads to ultimate wisdom and spiritual perfection.

They say there is an eternal sacred fig tree with its roots pointing upward and its branches growing downward. The ancient hymns are its leaves, and anyone who truly understands this tree knows the essence of all wisdom.
The branches of this tree spread both up and down, fed by the forces of nature, and its tender shoots are the things we chase with our senses. Its roots also reach down into the human world, tangling us in a web of endless actions and consequences.
From where we stand in this world, we cannot see the true shape of this tree, nor its beginning, end, or foundation. You have to cut down this deeply rooted tree using the sharp weapon of detachment.
Once it is cut down, you should search for that ultimate state from which no one ever falls back into worldly illusion. Simply seek refuge in the original, divine source from which this entire ancient universe first flowed.
People reach that imperishable home when they let go of pride, illusion, and toxic attachments. By focusing on the eternal self and stepping away from endless desires and the rollercoaster of joy and sorrow, they see reality clearly.
My supreme home doesn't need the sun, the moon, or fire to light it up. Once people arrive there, they never have to return to this temporary world.
Every living being in this world is an eternal, tiny fragment of myself. Yet, while caught in nature, they struggle constantly with the mind and the five physical senses.
When the soul enters a new body or leaves an old one, it takes the mind and senses along with it. It carries them just like the wind carries a fragrance from a flower.
By operating through the mind and the senses of hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell, the soul experiences the things of this world.
People who lack awareness don't notice the soul when it stays in the body, experiences the world, or finally departs. Only those who have developed the eyes of wisdom can actually see this process happening.
Dedicated yogis who put in the effort can clearly see the soul living within themselves. But those who haven't refined their own minds remain blind to this truth, no matter how hard they try.
The brilliant light of the sun that brightens the whole world comes directly from me. You should know that the gentle glow of the moon and the heat of fire are also my energy.
I enter the earth to support all living creatures with my vital energy. By becoming the nourishing moonlight, I give life and flavor to all the plants.
I am the digestive fire inside the bodies of all living beings. Working together with the inward and outward breaths, I break down and digest every kind of food they eat.
I am seated deep in the heart of everyone, and from me come memory, knowledge, and even forgetfulness. I am the ultimate truth to be discovered in all sacred texts, for I am both the author of this wisdom and the one who truly understands it.
There are two kinds of beings in existence: the changing and the unchanging. Every creature in the physical world is subject to change and decay, but the liberated spirit remains forever unchanged.
Beyond both of these is the highest reality, often called the supreme soul. This is the imperishable divine presence that enters into all worlds and keeps them perfectly sustained.
Because I exist entirely beyond the changing physical world and am even higher than the unchanging spirit, I am celebrated everywhere. Both in the world and in the ancient texts, I am known as the Supreme Person.
Arjuna, anyone who sees clearly and recognizes me as this Supreme Person truly understands everything. Because they see the whole picture, they devote themselves to me with all their heart.
Arjuna, I have just shared the most profound and secret wisdom with you. Anyone who grasps this truth becomes genuinely wise, and their life's purpose is completely fulfilled.
