Gita Chapter 8
Chapter 8 · 28 verses
Path of the Eternal God
Akṣhar Brahma Yog
In Chapter 8, Arjuna asks Krishna about Brahman, the self, and how to remember God at death. Krishna explains that a person's final thoughts determine their next life. Whatever state one remembers when leaving the body, they will attain. Therefore, Krishna advises Arjuna to constantly remember Him while performing his earthly duties. By practicing devotion and fixing the mind on the Supreme, one breaks free from the cycle of birth and death. Krishna contrasts the temporary material world, which is full of misery and rebirth, with His eternal, spiritual abode. He describes two paths of departure: the path of light leading to liberation, and the path of darkness leading to rebirth. A true yogi, armed with unwavering devotion, transcends these cycles and attains the supreme eternal state.

To achieve this, one must close off all the sensory doors of the body and lock the mind within the heart. By drawing the life breath up into the head, the practitioner becomes fully established in deep yogic concentration.

This entire multitude of beings is endlessly born and reborn, helplessly dissolving when the cosmic night arrives. Yet beyond this cycle of creation and destruction lies another unmanifest reality, one that is eternal and far superior. Even when all physical beings are destroyed, this supreme existence remains untouched.

A yogi who grasps this deep truth goes far beyond the rewards gained from studying scriptures, performing rituals, practicing self-discipline, or giving to charity. They ultimately reach the supreme, original spiritual home.
