Yoga through Discerning the Three Divisions of Faith

श्रद्धात्रयविभागयोग · Śhraddhā Traya Vibhāg Yog

In Chapter 17, Arjuna asks about the nature of those who worship with faith but ignore scriptural rules. Krishna explains that everyone's faith, along with their preferences for food, charity, austerities, and sacrifices, falls into three categories: goodness, passion, and ignorance. Actions in the mode of goodness are selfless, pure, and promote spiritual growth and well-being. Those in the mode of passion are driven by ego, pride, and material desires, leading to instability. The mode of ignorance is characterized by delusion, harm, and darkness. Krishna concludes by revealing the profound meaning of the mantra 'Om Tat Sat.' Chanting this sacred phrase dedicates all sacrifices, charities, and austerities to the Supreme Truth, purifying our actions and making them spiritually perfect when performed with unwavering faith.

Is their faith grounded in goodness, passion, or ignorance?"
Krishna replied: "The natural faith of every human being takes one of three forms, shaped by their own inner nature. Listen as I describe these three types of faith: those rooted in goodness, passion, and ignorance."
Arjuna, a person's faith is shaped entirely by their mindset and character. We are essentially made of our faith; whatever you truly believe in, that is what you become.
People drawn to goodness worship the divine, while those driven by passion worship powerful, worldly spirits and ambitious forces. Meanwhile, those lost in ignorance worship ghosts and the dead.

By starving and tormenting their own physical bodies, these foolish people are actually tormenting me, the divine presence living within them. You should recognize such misguided practices as entirely destructive and dark.
Even the food people prefer falls into three categories based on their inner nature. The same is true for the rituals they perform, the discipline they practice, and the charity they give; let me explain the differences.
People in the mode of goodness prefer foods that promote a long life, vitality, strength, health, and happiness. These foods are naturally juicy, nourishing, wholesome, and comforting to the body.
Those driven by passion crave foods that are overly bitter, sour, salty, spicy, dry, or burning hot. While highly stimulating, this kind of diet ultimately leads to discomfort, distress, and disease.
People steeped in ignorance tend to eat food that is stale, tasteless, or spoiled. They are drawn to leftovers and impure things that offer no real nourishment.
A spiritual practice or ritual is in the mode of goodness when it is done simply because it is the right thing to do. The person performs it faithfully according to tradition, without expecting any personal reward.
Arjuna, if a ritual is performed just to show off or to gain some material benefit, it is driven by passion. Such actions are more about boosting the ego than genuine spirituality.
A ritual is considered ignorant when it ignores all guidelines, lacks faith, and offers nothing to others. It involves no sharing of food, no thoughtful prayers, and no genuine generosity.
Physical discipline involves honoring the divine, respecting wise teachers, and keeping oneself clean and straightforward. It also means practicing non-violence and directing your physical energy toward higher purposes.
The discipline of speech is to speak words that are true, kind, helpful, and never meant to agitate others. It also includes the regular reading and recitation of uplifting spiritual texts.
Mental discipline means cultivating a calm, gentle, and reflective state of mind. It involves mastering your own thoughts and keeping your intentions pure and sincere.
When these three disciplines of body, speech, and mind are practiced with deep faith and no desire for personal gain, they are considered to be in the mode of goodness.
Any discipline performed out of pride, just to win respect, honor, or admiration from others, is driven by passion. The results of such self-serving actions are always unstable and short-lived.
Discipline is rooted in ignorance when it is done out of stubborn foolishness, involving self-torture or the desire to harm others. Such practices are destructive and entirely miss the point of spiritual growth.
True charity in the mode of goodness is given simply because it is the right thing to do, without expecting anything in return. It is offered at an appropriate time and place to someone who genuinely needs and deserves it.
Charity is driven by passion when it is given grudgingly or with strings attached. The giver is usually hoping for a favor in return or looking for some future reward.
Charity falls into ignorance when it is given disrespectfully, at the wrong time or place, or to unworthy causes. It is often handed over with contempt rather than genuine care.
The words 'Om Tat Sat' have traditionally been used to represent the ultimate, absolute truth. Since ancient times, spiritual seekers have used this phrase to consecrate their rituals, sacred chants, and spiritual practices.'
Because of this, dedicated spiritual seekers always begin their acts of charity, discipline, and worship by chanting the sacred syllable 'Om.' This centers their intentions on the divine before they even start.
By focusing on the word 'Tat,' which means 'That' or the ultimate reality, people seeking liberation perform their duties without looking for personal rewards. They offer their charity and discipline entirely to the universe.'
The word 'Sat' stands for goodness, truth, and eternal reality. Arjuna, this word is also used to describe any noble action or a person of genuinely good character.'
Being steadfast and consistent in your spiritual practices, discipline, and charity is also called 'Sat.' Ultimately, any action dedicated to a higher, divine purpose embodies this absolute truth.
Arjuna, any ritual, charity, or discipline performed without genuine faith is called 'Asat,' meaning untrue or unreal. Such faithless actions are ultimately meaningless, holding no real value in this life or the next.
