Chapter 17, verse 6

Bhagavad Gita 17.6

Krishna says

karṣayantaḥ śarīrasthaṃ bhūtagrāmamacetasaḥ
māṃ caivāntaḥśarīrasthaṃ tānviddhyāsuraniścayān

Meaning

By starving and tormenting their own physical bodies, these foolish people are actually tormenting me, the divine presence living within them. You should recognize such misguided practices as entirely destructive and dark.

What it means for us today

Harming one's own body in the name of religion or discipline is condemned. God resides within us, so treating ourselves with respect and care is a fundamental spiritual duty.
