Yoga through Discerning the Divine and Demoniac Natures

Daivāsura Sampad Vibhāg Yog

In Chapter 16 of the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna explains the distinct differences between divine and demoniac natures. Divine qualities, such as fearlessness, purity, compassion, and truthfulness, elevate the soul and lead to spiritual liberation. In contrast, demoniac traits like pride, arrogance, anger, and insatiable greed bind individuals to the cycle of rebirth and suffering. Krishna warns that lust, anger, and greed are the three gates to hell and self-destruction, urging Arjuna to abandon them completely. To avoid falling into illusion and moral decay, Krishna advises relying on the wisdom of sacred scriptures. By following scriptural guidance rather than selfish desires, one can understand their true duties, act righteously, and ultimately attain the supreme spiritual destination.

Krishna said: The qualities of a person born with a divine nature include fearlessness, a pure mind, and a steady commitment to spiritual knowledge. They are also marked by generosity, self-control, a spirit of sacrifice, the study of sacred texts, self-discipline, and honesty.
Such a person practices non-violence, speaks the truth, and remains free from anger. They are peaceful, let go of attachments, avoid finding faults in others, feel deep compassion for all living beings, and are free from greed, gentle, modest, and steady.
They also possess vitality, forgiveness, inner strength, and purity. They harbor no malice toward anyone and are completely free from arrogance. Arjuna, these are the natural traits of someone born with a divine disposition.
On the other hand, Arjuna, those born with a darker, harmful nature are characterized by hypocrisy, arrogance, and excessive pride. They are driven by anger, speak harshly, and remain trapped in ignorance.
The divine qualities lead to ultimate freedom, while the darker qualities pull you deeper into bondage. Do not worry, Arjuna, because you were born with a divine nature.
There are two fundamental types of human nature in this world: the divine and the harmful. I have already described the divine qualities in detail; now listen, Arjuna, as I explain the harmful nature.
People with this darker nature do not understand what is right to do and what they should avoid. You will not find purity, good conduct, or truthfulness in them.
They claim that the universe is just a random, meaningless place without any moral foundation or guiding divine presence. In their view, life is simply the result of physical union, driven by nothing more than lust.
Clinging to this cynical worldview, these lost and narrow-minded individuals engage in cruel, destructive actions. Ultimately, they become enemies of the world, causing only harm and ruin.
Driven by endless desires, they are consumed by hypocrisy, pride, and arrogance. Deluded by their own false beliefs, they commit themselves to impure and unethical goals.
They are plagued by endless anxieties that haunt them right up until the moment they die. Convinced that physical pleasure is the ultimate purpose of life, they believe there is nothing else beyond it.
Tangled in a web of endless expectations and driven by lust and anger, they constantly scheme to get ahead. They are willing to hoard wealth through corrupt means just to satisfy their cravings.
They constantly think to themselves, "I got what I wanted today, and tomorrow I will get even more. This wealth is already mine, and my fortune will only keep growing."
They boast, "I have crushed this enemy, and I will destroy the rest of them too. I am in control, I am meant to enjoy life, and I am successful, powerful, and happy."
They tell themselves, "I am rich and come from a high-status family; no one else can compare to me. I will perform rituals, give to charity, and enjoy myself." In this way, they are completely blinded by their own ignorance.
Confused by racing thoughts and caught in a web of illusions, they become deeply addicted to worldly pleasures. Eventually, this lifestyle drags them down into a miserable, hellish existence.
Stubborn and full of themselves, they are intoxicated by their own wealth and status. When they perform spiritual rituals or give to charity, it is purely for show, ignoring the actual spirit and rules of the practice.
Blinded by ego, power, arrogance, lust, and anger, these malicious people end up despising the divine presence. They resent Me, the Supreme Lord, who lives within their own hearts and in the hearts of everyone else.
Because of their cruel and hateful actions, I continually place these degraded individuals into similar, harmful conditions in the cycle of rebirth. They naturally gravitate toward dark and destructive lives.
Trapped in this harmful mindset lifetime after lifetime, these deluded souls fail to reach Me, Arjuna. Instead, they continue to sink into the lowest states of existence.
There are three gates that lead to this hell of self-destruction: lust, anger, and greed. For the sake of your own soul, you must completely abandon these three traits.
Arjuna, a person who breaks free from these three gates of darkness naturally acts in their own best interest. By doing so, they ultimately reach the highest spiritual destination.
Anyone who ignores spiritual wisdom and just blindly follows their own impulses will not find true success. They will miss out on lasting happiness and fail to reach the ultimate goal of life.
Therefore, look to the wisdom of sacred texts to guide you on what is right and what is wrong. Once you understand these spiritual principles, you can confidently do your work and fulfill your purpose in the world.
