śrī bhagavānuvācaūrdhvamūlamadhaḥśākhamaśvatthaṃ prāhuravyayam

Meaning

They say there is an eternal sacred fig tree with its roots pointing upward and its branches growing downward. The ancient hymns are its leaves, and anyone who truly understands this tree knows the essence of all wisdom.

What it means for us today

Krishna uses the metaphor of an inverted tree to describe the material world, rooted in the Supreme and branching downward into worldly existence. Understanding this helps us realize that our true origin is divine, not material.
