The Yoga of Devotion
Bhakti Yog
Arjuna asks whether worshiping a personal God or the formless absolute is better. Krishna explains that while both paths lead to him, worshiping his personal form with devotion is easier and more natural for human beings. He offers a step-by-step guide to devotion: if one cannot fix their mind entirely on him, they should practice meditation, work for his sake, or at least renounce the fruits of their actions. Finally, Krishna describes the qualities of a true devotee—someone who is compassionate, free from ego, balanced in joy and sorrow, and treats friends and foes equally. Such a peaceful and dedicated devotee is extremely dear to him.

Arjuna asked: "Between the devotees who constantly worship you in a personal form and those who meditate on the formless, imperishable reality, who actually has a deeper grasp of yoga?"
Krishna replied: "I consider those who focus their minds entirely on me and worship me with deep, unwavering faith to be the most accomplished in yoga."
There are also those who dedicate themselves to the unmanifest, formless reality—the eternal, unchanging, and inconceivable presence that exists everywhere.
By mastering their senses, treating everyone with equal respect, and actively working for the well-being of all creatures, these people also ultimately reach me.
However, the struggle is much harder for those who focus their minds on the formless absolute. For physical beings, making progress on an invisible, unmanifest path is extremely difficult.
On the other hand, there are those who offer all their actions to me and make me their ultimate goal, meditating on me with single-minded devotion.
Arjuna, when people completely absorb their minds in me, I quickly rescue them from the turbulent cycle of birth and death.
Focus your mind entirely on me, and let your intellect rest in me alone. If you do this, you will undoubtedly live within me forever.
If you find that you cannot keep your mind steadily focused on me, Arjuna, do not worry. You can still reach me through the steady yoga of bringing your attention back whenever it wanders.
If consistent practice is too difficult, then make it your primary goal to work for my sake. You can achieve spiritual perfection simply by dedicating your everyday actions to me.
If even dedicating your work to me feels like too much, then try to surrender to my guidance. Simply do your best to control your mind and let go of your attachment to the results of what you do.
Gaining spiritual knowledge is better than mindless practice, and meditation is even better than theoretical knowledge. But letting go of your attachment to the results of your actions is the highest path, because true peace immediately follows that kind of surrender.
A true devotee holds no hatred toward anyone, acting instead as a compassionate friend to all creatures. They are free from ego and possessiveness, remain balanced through both joy and sorrow, and are quick to forgive.
Such a yogi is always content, self-controlled, and firmly resolved in their purpose. I cherish the person who never causes anxiety in others and who is never disturbed by the world. They have freed themselves from the emotional turbulence of worldly excitement, anger, fear, and worry.
A devotee is very dear to me when they are independent, pure-hearted, and highly capable, yet remain impartial and free from inner turmoil. They engage in their work without feeling like they are the ultimate doer of the action.
I deeply value the devoted person who neither gets carried away by excitement nor gives in to hatred, who neither grieves over losses nor craves things they lack. They have moved beyond the dualities of good and bad fortune.
A truly devoted person treats friends and enemies with the same respect, and stays completely balanced whether they are being honored or insulted. They remain steady through heat and cold, joy and sorrow, having let go of all worldly attachments.
They view praise and criticism as exactly the same, speak thoughtfully, and are perfectly content with whatever comes their way. Unattached to any physical home and steady in their mind, this kind of devoted person is very dear to me.
Those who fully embrace this immortal path of dharma I have just described, trusting in it deeply and making me their ultimate goal, are the most dear to me of all.
