The story
This is the story of Kalpana Chawla, a girl from Karnal in Haryana who loved to look up at the sky. She grew up to become the first woman born in India to fly into space.

She was born in 1962, the youngest of four children. At home everyone called her Montu. When she started school, she picked her own name: Kalpana, which means imagination. Even as a small child, she loved watching aeroplanes fly overhead.

At about twelve, she decided she wanted to design aircraft. Many people, even her father, said this was not work for girls. But Kalpana did not give up. She studied aeronautical engineering at Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh, one of very few girls in her class, and finished in 1982.

Then she went to America to study more, and earned a PhD in 1988. She learned to fly small planes, gliders and seaplanes. At a NASA research centre, she studied how air flows around aircraft. In the early 1990s she became an American citizen.

In 1994, NASA chose her to train as an astronaut. On 19 November 1997, the space shuttle Columbia carried Kalpana into space. India's Prime Minister phoned her in space to congratulate her. With her she carried a T-shirt from her old school in Karnal.

Kalpana never forgot the children back home. At her request, NASA invited her school to send students to a summer space programme every year from 1998. When they came, she cooked Indian food for them at her home.
On 16 January 2003, she flew on Columbia again. For sixteen days the crew of seven worked day and night in two shifts, carrying out about eighty science experiments.

On 1 February 2003, Columbia was coming home. At launch, a piece of foam had broken off and damaged one wing. As the shuttle came down through the air, it broke apart high above Texas, just sixteen minutes before landing. Kalpana and her six crewmates died. India and America mourned them together.
The President of the United States said, "None of our astronauts traveled a longer path to space than Kalpana Chawla." She was given America's highest honour for astronauts, and India named a weather satellite Kalpana-1. Her story tells every child: a big dream, with hard work, can carry you to the stars.
Where accounts differ
Her birth date is usually given as 17 March 1962, the date NASA-based biographies and most encyclopaedias use; some books give 1 July 1961. Several accounts say 1 July 1961 was the date given to her school so that she could be admitted early (some say so she could sit her exams early); we could not see an original school record. The story gives 1962. Sources differ on when she became a US citizen (1990 or 1991); the story says the early 1990s. She is correctly called the first woman of Indian origin, or the first woman born in India, to go to space; she was a US citizen when she flew. The first Indian citizen in space was Rakesh Sharma in 1984. The Congressional Space Medal of Honor for the Columbia crew is dated 3 February 2004 in Wikipedia's list of recipients and 4 February 2004 in her own Wikipedia article, so the story gives only the year. NASA's biography says her first flight covered 6.5 million miles, while other accounts say 10.4 million, so the story gives no distance. During the 1997 flight a small research satellite she released with the robot arm did not work as planned; she was blamed at first, but NASA's review found problems with training, software and communication, so the story leaves it out. Some well-known quotes shared as hers (for example about being 'not just from any particular piece of land') are widely repeated but we could not find their original source, so the story quotes only President Bush's memorial speech of 4 February 2003, from the White House record.
