The story

This is the story of Tulsi Gowda, who never went to school, yet knew the forests of Karnataka better than almost anyone. People called her the "Encyclopedia of the Forest".

Tulsi was born in Honnali, a village in Uttara Kannada district, into a poor family of the Halakki Vokkaliga tribal community. Her father died when she was about two. There was no money for school, so she went to work with her mother.

Her mother was a daily labourer at a plant nursery of the Forest Department. There, young Tulsi learned to sow seeds and water tiny seedlings, and watched how each plant grew.

Over the years, she learned things no book teaches. She could find the "mother tree" of a species, the big, old tree whose seeds grow best. She knew the right time to collect each tree's seeds. She even knew to soak hard bamboo seeds in water for four days to wake them up.

For about thirty-five years she worked for daily wages, raising saplings for the forest. Then she was given a permanent job, and she worked until she retired at around seventy. Even later, if she found a rare seed, she carried it to the nursery.

A retired forest officer said she could recognise more than three hundred medicinal plants, and her community called her the goddess of trees. How many trees did she plant? The President's office said more than thirty thousand; others say a lakh or more. Tulsi herself said, "Lakhs, maybe crores. Now, I can't even find them."

She explained why forests matter in simple words: "We need forests. Without forests, there is no water, no crops, the sun becomes unbearably hot."

In 2020, the Government of India announced the Padma Shri for her. In November 2021, she received it from the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan, walking up barefoot in her simple traditional dress. The picture touched hearts across India. She said she was happy, but she valued the forests and trees more.

In her later years, Tulsi taught village children to find and care for seeds. She died in December 2024, after a long life. The trees she raised are still growing. Her story reminds us that true knowledge can come from patient work, and that caring for nature means caring for everyone.

Where accounts differ

Her birth year is uncertain: one obituary gives 1944, Wikipedia gives 1937 or 1938, and reports gave her age at the 2021 ceremony as 72, 77 or (in 2020) 83. Most obituaries say she was 86 when she died on 16 December 2024; the story avoids a birth year, and the facts give the range. The number of trees also varies: the President's office said more than 30,000 saplings, while other reports say one lakh or more, and one obituary says 30,000 a year. The story gives both and her own answer. Accounts of her job differ in detail (35 years as a daily wager then 15 permanent, or permanent from 1991 to 2005); the story follows the Mongabay interview. The Padma Shri was announced in January 2020 but presented on 8 November 2021 (Wikipedia's '8 November 2020' is a slip). The idea that mother trees feed seedlings through underground networks is still debated by scientists, so the story only says their seeds grow best.
