The story

This is the story of Havildar Abdul Hamid, a soldier who stood up to an attack by enemy tanks with a single gun mounted on a jeep.

Abdul Hamid was born in 1933 in the village of Dhamupur, in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh. His father was a tailor, and as a boy Hamid helped him at the sewing machine. At twenty-one he joined the army, in the Grenadiers regiment.

In September 1965, India and Pakistan were at war. In the Khem Karan sector of Punjab, near the village of Asal Uttar, the Pakistani army attacked with Patton tanks, among the most powerful tanks of that time.

Hamid commanded a recoilless gun, an anti-tank gun mounted on a jeep. On the morning of the tenth of September, as enemy tanks broke into the Indian positions, he drove out to a flanking position, to the side of the enemy's advance, under heavy shelling, and found a good spot hidden among the fields.

He took aim, and knocked out the leading tank. Then he quickly changed his position, and set a second tank on fire.

By now the enemy had spotted him. Machine-gun fire and shells rained down around his jeep. Hamid did not leave his gun. He kept firing at yet another tank, until an enemy shell struck him. Havildar Abdul Hamid gave his life on the battlefield.

His courage inspired his comrades to fight back with all their strength, and the tank attack was beaten back. Asal Uttar is remembered as one of the great tank battles of that war.

Abdul Hamid was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, and India remembers him as Veer Abdul Hamid. His story shows us that courage does not need big weapons. It needs a calm mind, quick thinking, and a heart that stays at its post.

At 0800 hours on 10 September 1965 Pakistan forces launched an attack with a regiment of Patton tanks on a vital area ahead of village Cheema on the Bhikkiwind road in the Khem Karan Sector. Intense artillery shelling preceded the attack. The enemy tanks penetrated the forward position by 0900 hours. Realising the grave situation, Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid who was commander of a RCL gun detachment moved out to a flanking position with his gun mounted on a jeep, under intense enemy shelling and tank fire. Taking an advantageous position, he knocked out the leading enemy tank and then swiftly changing his position, he sent another tank up in flames. By this time the enemy tanks in the area spotted him and brought his jeep under concentrated machine-gun and high explosive fire. Undeterred, Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid kept on firing on yet another enemy tank with his recoilless gun. While doing so, he was mortally wounded by an enemy high explosive shell. Havildar Abdul Hamid's brave action inspired his comrades to put up a gallant fight and to beat back the heavy tank assault by the enemy. His complete disregard for his personal safety during the operation and his sustained acts of bravery in the face of constant enemy fire were a shining example not only to his unit but also to the whole division and were in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
