The story

This is the story of Captain Vikram Batra, the young officer whose words, 'Yeh Dil Maange More', became a cry of courage for the whole country.

Vikram was born in 1974 in Palampur, in Himachal Pradesh, fourteen minutes before his twin brother, Vishal. Both his parents were teachers. He loved sports, joined the NCC, and dreamed of serving the nation in uniform.

In 1997 he became an officer in the 13th battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. Just two years later, in the summer of 1999, intruders occupied high mountain peaks in Kargil, and his battalion was sent to take them back.

On the night of the nineteenth of June, Lieutenant Vikram, soon to be promoted to Captain, led his company up steep rocky slopes to attack Point 5140, a peak more than five thousand metres high. They went round the side of the peak to surprise the enemy, and in close combat they captured it.

At dawn, he radioed his success signal: "Yeh Dil Maange More!" This heart wants more. His code name was Sher Shah, and soon the whole country knew it.

In July, his battalion attacked another peak, Point 4875. Vikram was sick with fever, but when his comrades needed help on a narrow ridge, he volunteered to go. On the seventh of July, shouting his regiment's battle cry, "Durga Mata ki Jai", he charged the enemy positions, and even when badly wounded, he pressed on.

Then he saw that one of his soldiers had been hit. Vikram went out under fire to carry him to safety, and was hit by enemy fire. Captain Vikram Batra gave his life for his country. He was just twenty-four years old.

Inspired by him, his men captured Point 4875. Today, that peak is known as Batra Top.

Vikram Batra was awarded the Param Vir Chakra. His story reminds us that a real leader looks after his team first, and gives his very best, every single time.

During 'Operation Vijay', on 20 June 1999, Captain Vikram Batra, Commander Delta Company was tasked to attack Point 5140. Captain Batra with his company skirted around the feature from the East and maintaining surprise reached within assaulting distance of the enemy. Captain Batra reorganised his column and motivated his men to physically assault the enemy positions. Leading from the front, he in a daredevil assault, pounced on the enemy and killed four of them in a hand-to-hand fight. On 7 July 1999, in another operation in the area Pt 4875, his company was tasked to clear a narrow feature with sharp cuttings on either side and heavily fortified enemy defences that covered the only approach to it. For speedy operation, Captain Batra assaulted the enemy position along a narrow ridge and engaged the enemy in a fierce hand-to-hand fight and killed five enemy soldiers at point blank range. Despite sustaining grave injuries, he crawled towards the enemy and hurled grenades clearing the position with utter disregard to his personal safety, leading from the front, he rallied his men and pressed on the attack and achieved a near impossible military task in the face of heavy enemy fire. The officer, however, succumbed to his injuries. Inspired by his daredevil act, his troops fell upon the enemy with vengeance, annihilated them and captured Point 4875. Captain Vikram Batra, thus, displayed the most conspicuous personal bravery and leadership of the highest order in the face of the enemy and made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
