The story

This is the story of Dr Verghese Kurien, an engineer who helped millions of village farmers work together. Because of their teamwork, India now produces more milk than any other country. People call him the "Father of the White Revolution".

Kurien was born in 1921 in Calicut, in Kerala. He studied engineering, and the government sent him to America to study on a scholarship. In return, he had to work for the government for a few years.

In May 1949, he was sent to a government creamery in Anand, a small town in Gujarat. He did not want to be there, and planned to leave as soon as he could.

But in Anand he saw how hard life was for dairy farmers. Traders bought their milk at whatever price they liked. So the farmers, led by Tribhuvandas Patel, had formed their own cooperative, a group owned by the farmers themselves. Kurien began helping to repair its old machines. Patel asked him to stay, and he did.

The idea was simple and fair. Every day, farmers, both women and men, brought milk to their village society. Everyone's milk was tested the same way and paid for by its quality. Part of the yearly profit went back to the members.

India had plenty of buffalo milk. Kurien's friend, the engineer H. M. Dalaya, and the team found a way to make milk powder from it, the first in the world. The farmers' milk was now worth more, and India needed to buy less from abroad.

In 1964, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri visited Anand and talked with the farmers. The next year, the National Dairy Development Board was set up, led by Kurien, to help farmers across India build cooperatives like Anand's.

In 1970, the Board began Operation Flood. Village cooperatives were linked to big cities, so village milk reached city homes and farmers got fair prices. By 1985, there were 43,000 village cooperatives. Around 1998, India became the world's largest milk producer.

Kurien received many honours, including the Padma Vibhushan and the World Food Prize. He died in 2012, aged 90. His birthday, 26 November, is now National Milk Day. In 1963 he described their aim as "the service of the common man through the common man." His story shows that when ordinary people work together fairly, they can change a whole country.

In electing these three men to receive the 1963 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, the Board of Trustees recognizes their creative coordination of government and private enterprise to improve the supply of an essential food and sanitation in one of Asia's largest and most crowded urban complexes and to raise living standards among village producers.

Where accounts differ

The year he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award is given as 1963 by the Award Foundation and the Government of India, but as 1964 in Wikipedia; the story follows 1963. Wikipedia gives his Michigan State master's degree as both 1947 and 1948; the Tribune obituary says 1948, so the story gives no year. The farmers' union was registered in 1946 with two village societies (the Magsaysay Foundation's write-up says 1948); accounts differ on how much milk it collected at first (about 200 to 250 litres a day). The dates of Operation Flood's phases differ slightly (Phase I 1970–1980 per NDDB and PIB, 1970–1979 per Wikipedia). India passed the USA as the top milk producer in 1997–98 per the Government of India, or 1998 per Wikipedia, so the story says "around 1998". The buffalo-milk powder process is often credited to Kurien alone, but sources name his colleague H. M. Dalaya as the one who developed it, so the story names both. A popular story says Prime Minister Shastri stayed a night in a village near Anand without telling anyone; the sources used here only say he visited and talked with farmers, so the story says that.
