The story

This is the story of Anandibai Joshi, one of the very first Indian women to become a doctor of modern medicine. In 1886, aged just twenty, she earned a medical degree in America.

Anandibai was born in 1865 in Kalyan, near Bombay. In those days, girls were often married very young. At only nine, she was married to Gopalrao Joshi, a postal clerk much older than her. Today, child marriage is against the law in India, and rightly so.

Gopalrao believed girls should study, which was unusual then. He taught Anandi at home, even though some neighbours disapproved.

When Anandi was about fourteen, she had a baby boy. With no proper medical care, he lived only ten days. Anandi was heartbroken. In her sorrow, she found a purpose: she would become a doctor, so other mothers and babies could get the care her son never had.

In those days, many Indian women would not let a male doctor examine them, and there were almost no women doctors. In February 1883, in Serampore near Calcutta, Anandi spoke to a public meeting in a college hall. India needs women doctors, she said, and she would go to America to become one, and come back still a Hindu.

Gopalrao could not afford to go with her. So in 1883, at eighteen, Anandi sailed to America without her family. In Philadelphia, she joined the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, one of the first medical colleges for women in the world.

Life there was hard. The winters were freezing, the food was strange, and she was often ill. Still, she kept wearing her sari and ate only vegetarian food. For her thesis, she wrote about caring for mothers in childbirth.

On 11 March 1886, Anandibai became a Doctor of Medicine. Even Queen Victoria sent her congratulations. She was chosen to lead the women's ward of a hospital in Kolhapur, and in November she came home to a joyful welcome.

But her health had grown weak in America, and she was now very ill with tuberculosis, a lung disease doctors then could not cure. On 26 February 1887, Anandibai died in Pune, aged twenty-one. She never got to run her ward. But she had opened a door. Today, when girls across India study medicine, they walk through the door Anandibai pushed open.

Where accounts differ

Anandibai is often called "India's first woman doctor", but Kadambini Ganguly of Calcutta also qualified in 1886, with the GBMC diploma from Calcutta Medical College, and went on to practise for many years; Anandibai's MD came first in March 1886, but she died before she could really practise. Most historians call them co-pioneers, so the story says "one of the very first". Her birthplace is given as Kalyan in most accounts and as Poona in the Drexel archive guide; the story follows Kalyan. Gopalrao's age at the marriage is given variously (about twenty years older, 26 or 30), and her age when her son was born as 13 or 14. Accounts differ on whether she caught tuberculosis in America or became seriously ill only after returning; the story says her health weakened in America. Sources also disagree on whether she actually worked at the Albert Edward Hospital (some say she taught and served there briefly; others say she never had the chance), so the story says she was chosen for the post. Her age at graduation is sometimes given as 21; by her birth date she was 20. Her own letters and later accounts say Gopalrao, while pushing her to study, was also very harsh with her, at times beating her when she was not studying; the story does not describe this for younger children, and teachers may discuss it with older students. Her words at Serampore are paraphrased, because published versions differ.
